Arequipa in Peru - Arequipa, known as the White City of Peru, is a must-visit for backpackers exploring South America.

Peru is a country of contrasts; bustling cities, dense Amazonian jungle, vast deserts, and towering Andean peaks. Naturally the most Iconic of all, Machu Picchu is usually on the bucket list for all those visiting Peru, however there is so much to explore in Peru.
Among its many gems, Arequipa stands out as a city of stunning colonial architecture, rich history, and breathtaking landscapes. Known as the “White City” due to its many buildings made from sillar, a white volcanic stone, Arequipa is a destination that seamlessly blends history, adventure, and culture.
Located in southern Peru, Arequipa is framed by three towering volcanoes; El Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu; giving the city a dramatic and awe-inspiring backdrop. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, packed with baroque churches, historic monasteries (The image above), and charming plazas, making it a dream destination for architecture lovers, backpackers, and explorers alike.
Why Backpackers and Explorers Should Visit Arequipa 🎒
Arequipa isn’t just a stopover; it's a must-visit for any traveler exploring Peru. Here’s why:
Awe-Inspiring Architecture
The historic centre of Arequipa is one of the most architecturally significant areas in Latin America. The city’s Spanish colonial buildings, made from the striking white sillar volcanic stone, create a unique cityscape. The Santa Catalina Monastery is one of the most impressive structures, covering an entire city block with its maze of colourful streets and cloisters.
Unreal Natural Landscapes
Arequipa is the gateway to Colca Canyon, one of the world’s deepest canyons and home to the majestic Andean condor. Trekking through this region offers dramatic scenery, ancient terraced landscapes, and an authentic look into indigenous Andean life.
A Culinary Hub
Arequipa is Peru’s undisputed foodie capital. The city boasts picanterías, traditional restaurants serving dishes like rocoto relleno (stuffed spicy peppers) and adobo (a slow-cooked pork stew). The Pisco Sour, Peru’s national cocktail, is a must-try here as well. Made with pisco (a grape brandy), lime juice, egg white, and Angostura bitters, it’s the perfect drink to enjoy while soaking in the city’s historic ambiance.
What to Do in Arequipa 🤔
Explore the Santa Catalina Monastery
Ok so a personal choice here as regular readers will know, my focus is largely on architecture and holy smokes does Arequipa have some to offer. The Santa Catalina Monastery, often referred to as a “city within a city,” is an architectural masterpiece. Founded in 1579, its brightly painted walls, peaceful courtyards, and historic chapels make it one of the most unique religious sites in the world. Add it to the list right now, I will wait .... You could write a blog post about this place alone and chance are, I probably will, so stay tuned for that! If you cannot wait, check out their 👉 homepage here 👈 where you can find the ticket prices.
Visit the Plaza de Armas
The heart of Arequipa’s historic centre, Plaza de Armas, is surrounded by stunning colonial buildings, including the grand Arequipa Cathedral, which is an architectural highlight with its neoclassical design and impressive facade. If you want a deep (and I mean really deep) dive into a similar plaza then read my post on the Plaza de Armas of Cusco. There are a lot of similar talking points and architectural styles, I will likely produce on for this plaza so make sure to subscribe at our homepage so you do not miss out. As always I am going to say to you what I always do. I usually say this for safety reasons but also cultural and that is ... Take a walking tour. It is a great way to get the lay of the land but in this case its also a super culturally enriching activity. 👉 Arequipa Walking Tour
Trek Through Colca Canyon
For adventure seekers, a multi-day trek through Colca Canyon is an absolute must. It’s not just about the views; the region is home to traditional villages, ancient terraces, and soaring condors, making for an unforgettable experience. Not quite as iconic as the Inca trail but for this reason it is a lot more accessible and quite strikingly beautiful. There are a couple of ways to do this ... The no stress way, book onto a day tour from Arequipa or even better for those looking for more adventure, book onto a 2 day tour from Arequipa, that drops you off in Puno ... did someone say Lake Titicaca?
The third way to do it is to go full backpackers and take it on yourself. But I will cover that in a different blog!
Sample Arequipa’s Local Cuisine
Arequipa’s food scene is legendary. Be sure to visit a traditional picantería to sample chupa de camarones (shrimp chowder) or the fiery ocopa sauce, a delicious blend of peanuts, chili, and cheese. If you want to tantalise your tase buds before you go then I found a good recipe for it 👉 Ocopa Sause 👈 and I can confirm it is delicious!
How to Get to Arequipa from Lima
There are multiple ways to get to Arequipa from more budget options to more quicker but naturally more expensive options. Personally I ended up doing a bit of both after one of the most terrifying but beautiful bus rides from Lima to Cusco, I put the buses on hold for a bit and opted to fly, perhaps not as environmentally friendly and you do not get to see the landscape change in the way you do from the bus (and the landscape is dramatic and evolving here) Have a look at my blog on the journey from 'Lima to Cusco by bus' to see some of Perus stunning scenery.
By Flight
The quickest way to reach Arequipa from Lima is by flight. Several airlines, including LATAM and Sky Airlines, offer daily flights that take around 1 hour and 30 minutes. To check out the latest rates for your time in Peru, hope onto Skyscanner and have a play.
By Bus
For those on a budget, buses are a great option. The journey takes 14–16 hours but offers stunning views along the way. Companies like Cruz del Sur and Oltursa provide comfortable overnight buses with reclining seats. There are two options for tickets here, Bus Bud being one. The second being going to the terminal of which ever city you are in and booking there and then! Prepare to settle in though as this will be around 20 hours! As I mentioned above if you want to see what 20 hours on a bus in Peru looks like then check out my Lima to Cusco by bus post.
