Medellin for Backpackers and Explorers in 2025
Medellin, Colombia
Once one of the most dangerous cities in the world, Medellín has transformed into one of Latin America’s most exciting and innovative destinations. Set in a lush green valley and framed by towering Andean mountains, the "City of Eternal Spring" offers a powerful mix of architectural rebirth, creative energy, and vibrant neighbourhood culture.
A City Reborn
Medellín's urban rebirth is a global inspiration. From cable cars connecting hillside barrios to the ultra-modern Metrocable and Parque Biblioteca España, the city’s investment in public spaces and infrastructure is jaw-dropping. This is social architecture in action; urbanism with people at its core.
Colonial Echoes
While Medellín is more contemporary in feel than other Colombian cities, you’ll find traditional architecture in areas like El Poblado, La Candelaria, and small colonial chapels dotted throughout the hills. The contrast between past and future is striking and worth seeking out.
Art & Architecture
Plaza Botero – Home to oversized sculptures by Medellín-born Fernando Botero, this plaza outside the Museum of Antioquia is an art lover’s paradise.
Barefoot Park – A sensory public space blending Zen gardens, water features and tactile textures.
Comuna 13 – Once notorious for violence, this neighbourhood is now covered in political murals, graffiti art, and colourful stairways; a visual metaphor for transformation and an essential excursion.
Local Vibes
El Poblado – The backpacker and expat hub, full of bars, cafes, coworking spaces and boutique hotels, Do not look much outside this region for accomondation, it really is where you need to be.
Laureles – More local and residential, with leafy streets, great restaurants and live music.
Hostel Vibes
This is such a great city for hostel there are so many to choose from, they are super social, the vibe is super chill by day, explore have fun and then get your booze on and party by night. Personally I say:
😇 18 - 25 Years Old - 💎 Los Patios Hostel
😎 25+ Years Old - 🌿 Viajero Medellín
🧑💻 Need a Co-working Space? -🧞♂️ Masaya Medellin
💰 On a Tight Budget - 💰 Purple Monkey Hostel
😈 Just Want to be Different? - 🐑 Black Sheep Hostel
If you want a full break down on why I links these to that break down then you can find more info on each hostel on my blog post 'Essential Medellin Itinerary Items'.
Nightlife
Medellín lives for its nights. From salsa clubs in La 70, to techno parties in rooftop bars, to traditional reggaetón beats in dimly lit dancehalls; the nightlife is legendary. Locals (Paisas) are proud, warm, and always ready to dance. For those backpacking there is also the infamous Gringo Tuesday where you can danse in the hottest (literally 🥵) club in Colombia and meet all those who have made the pilgrimage from the rest of the world!
Adventure & Day Trips
Guatapé – A colourful lakeside town with the famous El Peñol Rock, a 740-step climb with panoramic views, the views are stunning and so is the town of Santa Fe
Santa Fe de Antioquia – A colonial town just a few hours away, full of cobbled streets and historic charm.
Paragliding Tour over Medellin - This is such a rewarding thing to do for a resonable cost check with your hostel to see if they offer a paragliding tour, if now check out my recommendation ⬆️. For even more options check out my 'Essential Medellin Picks'.
Travel Tips
The city is walkable but take a cab to the key areas you want to explore.
Do not explore Comuna 13 on your own, especially at night
Take the Metrocable for the best aerial views of the valley.
Spanish is key; not much English outside tourist areas.
If there is a football match on go, even if you do not life football its a party with sport!
Why Medellín for Explorers?
This is a city that dares to rewrite its own story. Medellín is about transformation, resilience, and future-facing urbanism; all set in a breathtaking Andean setting. For the curious explorer, it’s one of South America’s most rewarding stops but like Bogota needs to be treated with respect. Make sure to read out safety tips for Medellín and Colombia for more detail on keeping yourself out of trouble.
