Exploring Colombia
Colombia
Colombia is a country of contrast and colour; one minute you're dancing in a colonial plaza, the next you're hiking through cloud forest to reach lost cities carved into jungle mountains. For backpackers and explorers, it's a land that rewards the curious and the bold with unforgettable experiences.
Once avoided, now adored, Colombia has shed its troubled reputation and emerged as one of South America's most dynamic destinations. From Caribbean coasts to Amazonian backwaters, it’s packed with everything a backpacker could want: rugged adventure, deep culture, breathtaking architecture, and a sense of discovery that still feels real.
Start in Bogotá, where street art and colonial history collide in the atmospheric neighbourhoods of La Candelaria. Head north to Medellín; once a symbol of conflict, now a creative hub with cable cars linking hillside barrios to the metro. In Cartagena, Spanish colonial walls hide vibrant streets alive with music, colour, and history. And out in the wilds? There’s the Sierra Nevada, the Tatacoa Desert, the Amazon, and the coffee country’s lush hills; each one offering something totally different.
Architecture is part of Colombia’s magic. Whether it’s the pastel-washed churches of Barichara, the Brutalist modernism of Medellín’s post-conflict rebuild, or the gold-studded pre-Columbian sites deep in the jungle, every structure feels like it belongs to a story.
Culturally, Colombia pulses with passion; from salsa in Cali, to the haunting rhythms of cumbia on the coast, to the indigenous traditions that still anchor rural life. And don’t get us started on the food: arepas, bandeja paisa, empanadas, fresh tropical fruits; all best enjoyed with strong Colombian coffee overlooking a mountain view.
Safety concerns have improved massively, and while it’s still wise to travel smart, backpacking Colombia today is about connection, adventure, and immersion in a country that’s proud to show who it really is.
For solo travellers, Colombia is especially magnetic; easy to make friends, easy to move around, and the kind of place that reshapes your idea of adventure. Whether you’re chasing wildlife in the Amazon, exploring old colonial towns, trekking to Ciudad Perdida, or island-hopping in the Rosario archipelago, Colombia is pure, unfiltered energy.
And maybe that’s the best way to describe it: Colombia is not polished; it’s powerful. And for a traveller willing to embrace the unexpected, it will absolutely blow you away.
