COMUNA 13
Once the most deadly place on earth now home to a revolution in art Comuna 13 rises again
Comuna 13
Medellin, Colombia
01
About
Once one of Medellín’s most dangerous districts, Comuna 13 has become a global symbol of urban renewal, community power, and art-led transformation. After decades of violence, the neighbourhood turned a corner with public investment in infrastructure, most famously the outdoor escalators, connecting the hillside barrios with the city below.
Today, Comuna 13 is a vibrant open-air gallery, filled with street art, music, and culture. Every mural tells a story, of resistance, memory, and pride. Architecture blends the practical (escalators, cable cars, staircases) with the expressive (graffiti-covered walls, community centres, and terraces with sweeping views).
