Mexico City a guide for backpackers and explorers
Mexico City, Mexico
Welcome to the cultural and architectural epicentre of Mexico; Mexico City, or CDMX as it’s affectionately known. One of the largest cities in the world, CDMX is a heady blend of ancient Aztec heritage, colonial Spanish architecture, modern design, and a buzzing urban vibe that never sleeps. For lovers of architecture, history, and Latin American energy; this city is a playground.
A City Built on Ruins
Mexico City stands atop the ancient city of Tenochtitlan, the once-glorious capital of the Aztec Empire. You can still see remnants of this in the Templo Mayor, a powerful archaeological site right next to the Zócalo. This fascinating juxtaposition; where pre-Hispanic foundations sit beneath cathedrals and palaces this sets the tone for the city’s layered story.
Spanish Colonial Grandeur
Walking through the Centro Histórico, you're immersed in colonial magnificence. Think ornate churches like the Metropolitan Cathedral, and civic buildings like the Palacio de Bellas Artes, whose neoclassical-meets-art-nouveau facade is iconic. The neighbourhood's architecture whispers of Spanish conquest and Catholic grandeur.
Modernist Marvels
Fast forward to the 20th century and Mexico City became a canvas for some of the world's most forward-thinking architects. Luis Barragán, Mexico’s modernist maestro, has left behind spaces that feel sacred in their silence and simplicity; don’t miss the Casa Barragán or Casa Gilardi.
Over in UNAM’s University City, bold murals and modern structures fuse politics with modernism, and are now a UNESCO site in themselves.
Neighbourhood Vibes
Roma & Condesa – Think leafy boulevards, art deco buildings, indie cafes and rooftop bars. Ideal for slow exploration and architectural spotting.
Coyoacán – Home to Frida Kahlo, this bohemian district is full of colourful colonial buildings and cobbled streets.
Polanco – The city's upscale quarter, known for its sleek galleries, luxury shopping and cutting-edge architecture.
Nightlife & Culture
By day, CDMX is a feast of museums (over 150!), galleries, and food markets. By night, the city transforms into a hive of mezcalerías, rooftop bars and underground music spots. Zona Rosa is known for its LGBTQ+ scene, La Roma for craft cocktail culture, and Centro for cantinas steeped in history.
Travel Tips
The city sits at over 2,200 metres above sea level, so take it easy for the first few days.
The metro is extensive and cheap; but avoid peak hours if you value breathing space!
Street food is sensational, but ease in to avoid a bad tummy. Tacos al pastor are a must.
Why Mexico City for Architecture Lovers?
There’s no other city in the world where you can see Aztec pyramids, colonial cathedrals, art deco mansions, brutalist government blocks and colourful modernist homes all within a single day. CDMX is a layered living museum and an architectural pilgrimage.
