Quintana Roo, Mexico
Welcome to Cancún, Mexico’s shimmering Caribbean gateway and one of the most iconic beach destinations on the planet. Known for its turquoise waters, powdery white sand, and legendary nightlife, Cancún is often associated with spring break parties; but there’s so much more under the surface.
A Tale of Two Cancúns
Cancún is essentially split into two areas:
Zona Hotelera – a long stretch of beachfront resorts, party hotspots, and shopping centres.
El Centro (Downtown Cancún) – where locals live, eat, and go about daily life. For a more authentic taste of the Yucatán, head here.
Mayan Roots & Ruins
The region is steeped in Mayan history. Within Cancún itself, you can visit El Rey Ruins and Yamil Lu’um, small archaeological sites nestled between the resorts. A day trip takes you to the grand temples of Chichén Itzá or the seaside citadel of Tulum, both unforgettable for history and architecture lovers.
The Architectural Scene
While Cancún is more famous for resorts than heritage buildings, the hotel architecture; particularly from the 1980s boom; reveals the evolution of tropical modernism. Resort design here reflects a mix of Mayan motifs, coastal breeziness, and international luxury.
Beaches & Natural Wonders
Cancún’s beaches are its crown jewel; Playa Delfines and Playa Norte on nearby Isla Mujeres are standout spots. For something truly special, dive into one of the region’s cenotes; crystal-clear natural sinkholes hidden in the jungle.
Nightlife & Culture
Cancún knows how to party. Whether it’s a beachfront DJ set, a live salsa band, or the iconic Coco Bongo, there’s nightlife here for every kind of traveller. That said, you’ll also find quieter local cantinas and excellent street food in El Centro.
Exploring Beyond Cancún
Isla Mujeres – A short ferry ride takes you to this chilled island with stunning beaches and a slower pace of life.
Puerto Morelos – A sleepy fishing town 30 minutes south, think reefs, mangroves and hammocks.
Valladolid – A beautiful colonial town and a perfect base for visiting cenotes and ruins inland as well as the lesser know mayan site ... something like 'Chichen Itza' 😉. Jokes aside if you do not stay in Valladolid you can day trip it coupled with Chichen Itza for a reasonable price.
Travel Tips
Public buses (R1, R2) run constantly between the hotel zone and downtown.
Tours can be pricey, research or go direct for better prices.
It’s safe, but like any tourist zone, keep an eye on valuables and don’t overdo the tequila! Oh and walking home alone at night is a big no for both guys and girls. You can read more on the safety of Cancun on my dedicated Blog 'Is Cancun safe for tourists?'
Why Cancún for Explorers?
Cancún is a jumping-off point for broader Yucatán exploration. It’s the perfect blend of beach bliss, ancient ruins, underwater adventure and big nights out. Whether you’re here for a few days or using it as a launchpad, it’s a sparkling slice of Mexico that delivers way beyond the party rep. Another huge advantage of Cancun is the fact it is one of the most visited sites in Mexico meaning flights here can be found for a very reasonable cost!
