A lot of backpackers start their travel trail the city of Cancun due to its international airport and the availability of cheap flights. If you are like me then you did exactly that, the next cities along the way are Tulum, Bacalar, Chetumal which you can find on our Mexico travel guide page beyond these places you have a decision to head further up and into Mexico or take the boat ride to Belize.
Today we are going to quickly unpack the boat ride from Chetumal to Belize as it always seems to be a point of mystery. Fortunately however Chetumal to Caye Caulker is simple enough so lets unpack this and maybe even get it booked in.
There are largely two options here:
Option 1 - Arrive to Caye Caulker in the afternoon,
Option 2 - Arrive into Caye Caulker around noon.
Depending on which option you would like to take will determine who you will travel with, but both options cost around $77.00 USÂ (One way).
Option 01 - Afternoon arrival.
With San Pedro Belize Express, you will depart around 3:30pm from Chetumul will arrive into Caye Caulker around 5:45pm (click below).

Option 02 - Noon Arrival
With Water Jets International (click below) you can leave at 10am to get to Cay Caulker just after midday.

No matter which option you choose, arrive early to the dock as you will have exit forms to sort and you may have to pay the exit tax (PESOS$534.00).
Whilst waiting for the boat you will be rounded up and your bags will be checked by sniffer dogs for drugs and contraband.

Once you are all done jump on the boat for a 90 minute journey to San Pedro Island where you will have to do you immigration forms for Belize. Once you have completed these its simply a case of jumping back onto the boat for the final 30 minutes of the journey to get to Cay Caulker dock.Â
Naturally always double check your tickets and book ahead if you can.
For onward travel to Belize the process is exactly the same, but you will already be stamped into Belize so one less thing to worry about.
And that is it explorers. Simple. Grab a coconut for me in Caye Caulker. Cheers
For the curious explorer
