That is because it is a 10 hour ride from Tulum deep in the lush jungles of Chiapas. This makes it a fantastic stop for the backpacker traversing the beautiful Mexican countryside that a holiday tourist just is not going to take (unless they are an absolute Mayan/ archeological/ architectural enthusiast! Palenque is awe-inspiring containing temples and intricate carvings.
