Exploring Belize
Belize
Belize may be small, but it’s one of Central America’s most rewarding backpacking gems; a country that offers Mayan ruins, world-class diving, untamed jungle, and island vibes all in one go. English-speaking and culturally diverse, it’s a perfect soft landing for new explorers and a treasure trove for seasoned backpackers.
Start your journey in laid-back Caye Caulker, where golf carts replace cars, reggae beats spill from beach bars, and “go slow” is a way of life. Divers and snorkellers will be in paradise here; the Great Blue Hole, Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and the second-largest barrier reef on the planet are just offshore.
On land, things get even wilder. Explore ATM Cave; an archaeological site hidden deep in the jungle where skeletons and Mayan artefacts lie in sacred silence. Wander through Caracol or Xunantunich, stunning ancient Mayan cities still cloaked in rainforest. For something more chilled, head south to Placencia or Hopkins for Garifuna culture, beach serenity, and fresh seafood with Creole flair.
Belize is raw, authentic, and still feels untouched by mass tourism. It’s ideal for those seeking both coastal calm and deep jungle adventure; and it connects easily with Guatemala or Mexico for overland travellers.
