About
Mehrangarh Fort rises from a sheer cliff of red sandstone, towering 120 metres above the blue city of Jodhpur. Founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, it remains one of the largest and most imposing forts in India. The walls are so thick they seem to grow from the rock itself, their gateways carved with spikes to repel war elephants. Within the fortified ramparts lie a series of palaces, courtyards and temples, each more intricate than the last. From the delicate lattice screens of the Zenana (women’s quarters) to the mirrored splendour of the Sheesh Mahal, the fort embodies centuries of Rajput power, artistry and resilience. Today, it stands not only as a military bastion but as a cultural museum, echoing with stories of battles, dynasties and desert life.

How to get there
Mehrangarh Fort dominates the skyline of Jodhpur and is easily reached from the old city. Visitors can climb winding lanes by foot, hire an auto-rickshaw, or take a taxi from the railway station or airport, both less than 10 kilometres away. My tip is hop into a rickshaw and away you go!

Architecture Highlights
The seven massive gates mark the fort’s long history of conflict and victory, with cannonball scars still visible in the stone. Inside, the palaces dazzle with carved sandstone, painted ceilings and gilded chambers. The museum houses collections of royal cradles, weapons, miniature paintings and textiles that illuminate the world of the Rathore dynasty. From the ramparts, the panorama of Jodhpur’s indigo-coloured houses stretches to the horizon, a view unmatched anywhere in Rajasthan. Cultural performances and festivals held in the courtyards add a living dimension to this monumental space.
