Panama City Things To Do - Must Do List

1. Free walking tour: You will hear this from me time and time again but one of the best things to do when first getting into a new city is to do a freewalking tour. This will give you a historic background of an area and possibly a modern socio-political one. Its just the best way to get a better understanding of Panama's rich heritage, and meet like minded people. Check out Guru walks. In some cities you may need more than one but Casco Viejo will be a great tour, which brings us to point No.2.

2. Casco Viejo: A Glimpse into History: Cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and vibrant street art make this UNESCO World Heritage site a backpacker's delight. It has charming plazas, cute cafes, and you can snap photos of the iconic Panama sign. There is a Selina here with a roof top bar, if you go just before sunset you can watch the city transform from day to night The image above was taken from the Selina Rooftop bar.

3. Panama Canal: No trip to Panama City is complete without paying homage to the engineering wonder that is the Panama Canal. This one is definitely an Uber away but don't worry there is a fairly constant stream of taxis and shuttles to take you back to the city. I lost a good few hours here watching the massive ships navigate through the locks which connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. On arrival, you will be guided through the Miraflores Visitor Center for an up-close look at the canal's history and operations before arriving at the viewing platform.

4. Ancon Hill: Hiking Day: Trek up Ancon Hill. This short but rewarding hike offers panoramic views of the city skyline, the ocean, and the lush greenery that surrounds Panama City. It's the perfect spot for sunrise or sunset – a moment of tranquility amidst the bustling city. If you do chose sunrise for this one you can spend your afternoon with some well earned food.

5. Mercado de Mariscos: Seafood Delight: If sea food is your bag, you are not far from Mercado de Mariscos. Indulge in ceviche, grilled fish, and other fresh catches while soaking in the lively atmosphere of this bustling market.

Panama City Things To Do - A Busy Day Itinerary Proposal

The above suggestions can be pieced together to make a rather busy but fruitful day (if we remove the canal visit).

If you have an early start and take on Ancon hill for sunrise, you can walk back down to Casco Viejo for a well earned breakfast, there are a multitude of options for food here including for vegan options try The Vegan Shake, Dodó Bon Pan Café, or Mahalo, One thing to note, most dishes will set you back around $10-15 dollars and drinks another 5 on top. Casco Viejo, is not the best place for cheap eats.

Alternatively simply grab a coffee and croissant. Just as a side bar that is not going to save you money, Sisu Coffee Studio is meant to be excellent, I have not personally been but it is spoken highly of, let us know if you go and if it is up to the hype. Other Cafes of note are Café Unido Casco Viejo, Casa Sucre Coffeehouse, the one thing to note here is that there is not a shortage of cafes where you will be able to get food and a drink for less than a restaurant.

Arrange your walking tour for around 10:30 onwards, times are usually staggered so you should be able to find something for even around midday. The tours last around 2 hours. After two hours of walking, you may want another sit down, but if feeling brave, grab a bike from Burke Bikes Casco Viejo and tour the waterfront. Bike down to the headland Flamenco Island for a great view back towards the city and take in that sea air.

Once you are done with the bikes, head to Selina for a glass of wine to watch the sunset before heading home (or if you are crazy) talk to Selina for which club to hit that evening (there are a lot in Casco Viejo so you will not be short of options).

After that day you may want a day with your legs up in a hammock but if you are ready for more then lets carry on.
