Hi there intelligent explorer! I’m Jack; a solo backpacking architect who fell in love with Panama City’s unique blend of history, culture, and modernity. My time in this city was a whirlwind of exploration, from wandering ancient ruins to enjoying rooftop sunsets. In todays post we are going to be hitting the streets of Panama City in search of the very best things to do for all you looking to explore the depths of this really cool city.

Let’s jump into the top 11 things to do in Panama City in 2025, with the usual Backpackers Blueprint USP (architecture & history), as well as some day tours some top tips for your time in Panama City and a whole bunch of culture. We have some bonus picks at the very end for day tours outside of the city I really think you should take, so make shure you check those out below.

You can find it everything we are going to talk about today on the map below!

11 Activities for Explorers in Panama City

Lets look at the very best of what Panama City has to offer and your must not miss activities.

No.1. Wander Through Casco Viejo

Time: 2–3 hours

Cost: Free (Yay)

Tower in Casco Viejo, Panama City, with red roofs and ocean in background. Clear sky. Coordinates: Latitude 8.95277, Longitude -79.53458.

Why Go: Lets start with one that has a fantastic price (free) Casco Viejo is the beating heart of Panama City, with cobblestone streets, colonial buildings, and vibrant street art. It’s a neighbourhood where history meets a buzzing cultural scene.

Grab a coffee in a restored café, explore boutique shops, or enjoy live music at a rooftop bar.

Tour Suggestion: Naturally, Casco Viejo is perfect for a walking tour, if you want to understand the history of this area then take a walking tour of the area. You can do a 'free walking tour of Panama' with Guru (you tip what you think the tour was worth) or if you want to pay for someone to show you the sites then my personal choice would be Legends and Hidden Gems of Casco Viejo Tour at $39 per person you will get a 2 and a half hour long guided tour by a knowledgable local. If there is one area you need to understand in Panama City its Casco Viejo.

No.2. Explore the Panama Canal at Miraflores Locks & Gambo nature reserve

Time: 2–3 hours

Cost: $20 for entrance

Why Go: No trip to Panama City is complete without seeing the Panama Canal in action. At Miraflores Locks, watch ships navigate this engineering marvel and learn about its impact on global trade. The visitor center features interactive exhibits and a film that’ll give you a deeper appreciation of the canal’s importance. You can jump in an Uber for a super reasonable price the driver will know exactly where to drop you (lets be honest they could probably drive this route in their sleep). Head up to the ticket office and purchase tickets on the door, not prior booking needed.

A richer experience: If you want to couple the canal with a wildlife experience and here in Panama I suggest you do as the biodiversity around the Panama Canal is extensive, then reserve a spot on the Monkey Island & Lake Gatun Tour you can go from watching boats to sitting in a small one spotting wildlife and enjoying key viewpoints.

No.3. Marvel at the Biomuseo

Time: 2 hours

Cost: $18 for adults, discounts for students

Tickets: Book directly through Biomuseo

Colourful, geometric Biomuseo building in Panama City near the ocean. Visible ships in the sea. Lush greenery and pathways surround.

Why Go: Designed by Frank Gehry, the Biomuseo is as colourful and eye-catching as its purpose is important. The museum highlights Panama’s biodiversity and its role as a land bridge for countless species. Interactive displays make it a fun and educational stop, even if you’re not a science buff.

Must Take Trips When in Panama

Ok so these are some great options for your time in Panama but what if you want to get out of the city to immerse yourself in the culture of Panama, well great news we have a couple of suggestions for you.

The best and perhaps most culturally rewarding trip to take in Panama is ...

This tour will get you up close and personal with an indigenous tribe, you will be able to visit the village and speak to the community before venturing onto a beautiful waterfall. Transport to and from Panama City, this tour is our very top pick for those looking for a cultural excursion away from the crazy city.

The second excursion we highly recommend adding to the itinerary is for those who do not have much time in Panama is

The San Blas islands are simply stunning. Home to the Guna Yala and a place where coconuts are still traded as currency. The Islands are picture perfect, the epitome of paradise and you need to check them out when in Panama. If you are short on time in Panama then day trip over to them, you will not regret it!

Top Hotel and Top Hostel pick for 2025

We have selected Casco Viejo for both these options as it is the most picturesque part of the city with a stunning view back over the bay to the commercial district. You will find cute cafe's and nice wine bars and some great restaurants to so for us, its a no brainer to stay in Casco Viejo. Make sure to book in advance as this hot spot can sell out quickly due to its popularity.

🎒 Top Pick for Backpackers

For all you backpackers and solo travellers on a budget (me) check out the beautiful Magnolia Inn. This is also set in a traditional Spanish building and for the architecture purists and those looking to immerse themselves into the history and culture of Panama City. Again a clean and comfertable stay but on a very affordable budget.

🏖️ Top Pick for Holiday Makers

None in Casco Viejo come better than Hotel San Felipe right in the heart of the Spanish architecture you can be sure of a clean and comfortable and safe stay. 24 hour security/ front desk, a cute courtyard to tuck yourself from the hustle and bustle and a beautiful rooftop bar to watch day turn to night with those views of the high rise.
